Freedom Is Not Self-Determination
In classical philosophy and theology, freedom is not self-determination. Freedom is the disciplining of desire so as to make the achievement of the good first possible and then effortless. For him, I got this desire in me. And it's pushing toward the good. But the trouble is I'm so stupid and I'm so conditioned by my sin that I can't achieve it. That's a better understanding of freedom than sort of sovereign self-determination but our country is really in the grip of that.
