In the early days of television, it was not even in color. After colorized t v, it was still really a sort of rasterized screen with blobs of color flashing at different times to create the illusion of an image. And we all know that what we're seeing is not really what's happening in real life. But people came to recognize that those illusions were more powerful and consequential than than reality. The goal of many people became to succeed at the level of that illusion, rather than succeeding at thelevel of reality.
