Donald Swanson and the South African Republic
In 1895, Diamond Magnet and British nationalist Sarah Cecil Rhodes had his eye on the South African Republic. An armed force of around 700 men under control of Dr Leander Jamison was to be placed on the Transfile border ready to assist and support this insurrection. The things went badly wrong because Jamison badly ignored orders to retreat and the result was that more than 400 of these men were captured. When he was done, Swanson had the 13 ringleaders charged with unlawful military expedition against the South Africa Republic. They were convicted and jailed, and for a time it cooled the tensions on the border of the Dutch and British empires. But investigating outrages at the frontier of the empire wasn't Donald
