The Feast of Trompets - A Celebration of Joy
The events of this chapter are less than a year from nehemiah's first hearing of the report from jerusalem. Ezra instructed them to honoured the day as one of feasting, encouraging them to enjoy god's good gifts and to show charity. Joy was supposed to be at the heart of israel's and the festal days were important for this reason. So although mourning on account of their sins was important, the priority of cultivating joy eclipsed it.
