Hybridization is the idea that atomic orbitals fuse to form these hybridized orbitals. Scientists came up with this theory because they observed that all the electrons in a bond have the same energy. This would only be the case if for some reason these orbitals formed hybrid orbitals when bonds were formed. And it's actually quite simple how you solve these problems on the MCAT.
