Celestia and Scaling
Celestia is a modular system that could be used to solve scaling problems. It's based on the sharting design, but with more secure and flexible features. The first version of celestia was released last year in an open-source project called "Lazy Ledge" But it has not yet been widely adopted by other software developers.
