interval training is about creating a signal for adaptation, but we've turned it into this advanced hieroglyphics. You need to accumulate minutes at a reasonably high intensity. And then what we tended to see was that around 90%, 91, 2% of heart rate max was high enough to get good adaptations. A guy named David Bishop down in Australia is even starting to collect some data that suggests that very high blood lactate may actually have some inhibitory effects on adaptive signaling.
