Extrinsic Motivation Is Often Devoid of Passion
Our society is set up for extrinsic motivation so it's actually quite hard to go against that. Extrinsic motivation is often devoid of passion and some people just do the bare minimum to get reward like at uni. If you're intrinsically motivated about something then your grades don't matter as long as you are doing it well. A therapy session can be a good place to start thinking about why things have changed in our lives since we've been through them.
