After prohibition was repealed in 1933, much of the criminal activity across America transitioned into labor racketeering and loan sharking. Many of Boston's ethnic neighborhoods were Irish, especially South Boston, referred to as Southy. As a mob city, Boston was typical, but it was also unique in at least one respect: The dominant mafia family in Boston was not based in Boston.
