The Hillsbury disaster indirectly contributed to a decrease in football hooliganism. After the disaster, safety improvements were made in English football stadiums. This included replacing fenced standing terraces with fully seated stadiums. By this point, fewer football clubs and fewer fans were suffering from this British disease. In the 1990s, violence at football matches started to drop.
