Is There a Way to Successfully Retire Something?
If you can't come up with a way of conceivably actually retiring completely the thing that you're rewriting, then you shouldn't do it. The rewriht always takes longer. Ad if you can't shut down the new thing, the old thing, till the rewrite is done, well, now some one has to keep fixing bugs and keep that old thing operable until the new thing is ready to go in full capacity. If you really don't want to work on that old thing any more, just fix the old thing in place.
