The Warren Court and the American Free Speech Movement

One of the reasons that the Warren court was so unpopular was that these and a bunch of other opinions, essentially like ground McCarthyism to a halt. This effort in the second red scare to crack down on the domestic Communist Party was one of the most comprehensive campaigns of speech suppression of the last century in the United States. And I think part of why despite the way in which conservatives position themselves today, the heart of the American free speech movement really found its wings with the Warren court.
