The other thing that was common with all the irish, for a outlaw heroes, is they were chivalrous. And what you see there is it's like no matter what ship was thrown on the outlaw they could still find happiness and meaning. They also had a sense of dignity to care about something as basic as their appearance and to have self esteem.
