Shard evm execution is theoretically possible but doing it in ways that preserve good assumptions is not really doable without working zkavms. One of the reasons why I think we've been preferring a lot of these kind of outside of protocol approaches to a lot of problems is because core developer bandwidth is limited and if we can solve problems and iterate on solutions outside the protocol then it's just much easier than doing it inside.
