Palo Alto was founded on wealth generated by the railroads in the late 1800s. The area is divided by a highway 101, and 80% of the population has at least a college degree. On the other side of the highway, just a quarter of people have college degrees. And the poverty rate is 12%. This too, Malcolm says he and the other children of Palo Alto were not supposed to notice.
