The Evolution of Wildfires
Fires really a natural part of much of the landscape. It was natural causes, lightning and things that have caused it. But then indigenous people use fire to manage the land for many millennia. If you burn the state landscape every five to 10 years in the right conditions in May or in June,. You end up with a very like resilient landscape which is quite fire resilient. And so that's the natural state. Being 100 years ago with colonization of the American West, we basically interrupted that cycle. We basically stopped indigenous people from using fire to managing the land as the timber industry came online. As settlements popped up, we started to see fire as the enemy.
