The Importance of Conditional Statements in Politics
The idea that there was nothing we could have done is a far more effective narrative to avoid responsibility for COVID than the individuation one. I mean, it's very clearly has racist implications that a number of politicians don't want to be charged with. It does show that the responsibility lies kind of less than any one particular individual's bad choices and more in the like very institutions and structural incentives we've set up for those people to avoid doing things that are valuable for public health.
