The Tokugawa Policy of Isolation
The Tokugawa shogunate essentially closed off the nation, the nation of Japan to outside forces. They adopted a policy of isolating Japan from external influences. So they refused to allow European ships to dock in Japanese port. The Europeans wanted to trade with Japan. And that's why in the 1860s, 1867, 68 or so, there was an overthrow of the Shogunate. It was a coup d'etat. We know what the Europeans did to India. We don't need to repeat that. we had the opium wars and all that.
