What's the Difference Between a Volunteer Army and an All Volunteer Army?
Volunteer armies tend to be made up of the poorest people in society. There's nowhere else to go, and they end up finding their way into the military. As conscription is brought in over the course of the war, it becomes a much more galitarian force. The power of the individual here is immense. And we're so used to telling the story of the second world war through the great men and sometimes the great women. But actually, ordinary people had real agency.
