How Do We Know What We Learn When We Learn Words?

The first thing that occurs to many English speakers is to sort them by color. Were it not for color words, it would not be the obvious thing to do. It's an asymmetric relationship, because when you learn the word you necessarily learn the category. By having those words in the language you ensure that everyone in the speech community learns at least these categories.
