The Relevance of the RH System in Transfusion Medicine
RH, negative individuals who are exposed to depositive red blood cells are at risk of developing anti-D antibodies. This is particularly important in women during their second pregnancy with an RH positive baby. How do we treat an RH negative woman during pregnancy to prevent hemeolytic diseases of the newborn? And what about granulocyte or human neutrophil antigen systems? Yes, leukocyte antibodies are formed from exposure to these antigens by transfusion, pregnancy or transplant. These are implicated in the mechanism of transfusion related acute lung injury and trolley.
