I'm sympathetic to people who come out of contemporary museums very puzzled and they'll go to Rothko. And then we'll sit down on a bench and we'll essentially not know what to do. But if you did that with an artist like Rothko, you're going to end up with something that's going to look crude. You're going to say, this is somebody who shows you how dark the human condition is but perhaps carry some sort of message for salvation through absorption into the wider world of human relationships.
