Most people don't run a node themselves when they're mining they're mining with a mining pool and in that case you just use this third party mining software. A light client is not dealing directly with blocks but it's dealing with the headers of these blocks. This allows you to if you're doing some transaction with a specific account for instance you can prove that this account had some ETH.
