The lap approach had a slightly increased risk of mucosal perforation. A randomized control trial performed at Riley demonstrated that a relaxed POI lib feeding protocol was no different in regards to rates of post-operative vomiting or readmission rates. If our child did not have the mucosa perforation I would have allowed our child to start eating formula or breast milk four hours after he was excavated and essentially POI lib. With the relaxed feeding protocol the volumes are not as high so it's usually 12.5 mls per kilogram initially until they tolerate two feeds.
