"I realized that the major thing I've done as a professor besides teaching my classes is to advise doctoral students. And over the years, I got to be quite a good thesis advisor because one of the things I could do was to help them decide how to go from doing experiment to writing it up," he says. "What the synthesizing mind can do, at any age, it's got the information stored, but it can pick it up and use it for different information."
