How Do Toddlers Use Language?

Bob Greene: I love the word useful as a lens on things. And that's, we'll get a little bit later into the evolutionary ideas of language. So how do toddlers use these tokens that are highly overloaded? Well, oftentimes what happens is that it might seem that they know the meaning of the word in the same way that we might think that you and I know it, or at least an approximation of it. But actually what they're doing is just trying to make sense of what you're saying in the moment. He says kids gradually or time sort of try to figure out what we are trying to say from the context in which they hear the words.
