The Revolta of Maximus, a Man Who Was Right Smack Dab in the Middle of It All
Maximus was a longtime friend, ally, and compatriot of the Theodosian family. His relationship with younger Theodosius would have gone back to earliest stages of now-emperor's career. Maximus' correspondence with Eastern Augustus immediately following Demise of Gratian clear that he expected him to be happy about it. But before we get into the Revolta of Maximus, I want to back up a little bit and introduce a man who is going to be right smack dab in the middle of it all: St. Ambrose, the Bishop of Milan.
