Why States Choose to Colonize
In the book, I distinguished between two logics. One is settler led colonization - settlers moving into frontier areas and the state kind of followed. The other is state led colonization -- states actively trying to recruit people to move into a frontier area where they've cleared of indigenous population. And you could see that in Britain, in Ireland, in the early 1600s, as well as right up to the current day in places like Israel and the West Bank,. But also China and Xinjiang.
