The Legacy of Reconstruction
Reconstruction was an era of tantalizing possibility and radical change in a country that is constantly redefining the meaning of democracy, citizenship, and freedom. The 14th and 15th Amendments would provide the legal framework to defend their rights. A century after the Civil War, it would take a second social upheaval, the 1960 Civil Rights Movement, to fulfill at least some of the broken promises of Reconstruction.
