The Importance of Dialectical Views in the History of the Roman States
The gens no longer became the social basis of society and it was replaced by the state within the Greek and Roman context. On one hand, we might want to read this as some sort of loss for humanity like a primitive communism that was the gens which had been lost. But Engels really focuses in on here is the fact that by the time that the state could emerge, the gens had begun to produce its own set of contradictions.
