The Importance of Understanding the Artist's Point
In many cases, this is already sort of a sore point, right? It's not like the work of art creates the sore point. So I think there was not so much that critics didn't understand or that some parts of the population didn't understand what was going on. They understood exactly who would put them in their house, which was the rising middle class. And that's who were buying these pictures and who were enjoying these pictures. That claim not to understand is a way of saying, I refuse to understand what's going on here. Because if I understand what's happening here, then I have to understand a change that's happening in my society. And that changes frightening to me
