A History of the Goths
When Alaric died, there was no clear-cut replacement waiting in the wings. A power-struggling suit named Sargeric bypassed the usual election process and seized the crown for himself. Seven days after seizing the crown, he himself was assassinated,. replaced by a cousin of Alaric and Atoll's named Walia. Wallia, supported by the majority of the Goths in Barcelona, was able to hold on to power until his death in late 418 or early 419. This will see relations between the Romans and Goths repaired.
