The History of the US Air Force

The F-15 Eagle is an extremely maneuverable tactical fighter designed to gain air superiority in any combat zone. The first Iraqi aircraft shot down was hit by a Sparrow missile fired by a US F-15 during Persian Gulf. I think it's one of the last times we had any kind of real air-to-air combat in the US military. There were some air combat between US and Russian forces or Syrian forces over Syria, not sure though.
