CHAPTER

Acute Behavioral Disorder - What Causes ABD?

We most commonly see ABD associated with acute on-cronic drug use, or even actually with withdrawal of substances. But it's not all about cocaine; around 10 to 20% of cases are caused by a purely psychiatric disturbance. These include head injury, hypoglycemia, serotonin syndrome and the acutely intoxicated patient with alcohol or other substances. Sepsis, end-cavalopathy, hypoxia, a space-occupying lesion, a subrachnoid hemorrhage,. metabolic derangements, electrolyte derangements and heat stroke.
