The Loss of Faith in Reason in Europe
In contemporary European high culture and increasingly in our own this loss of faith in reason. The attempt to find a safe harbor in the postmodernist claim of well I'll respect your truth if you respect my truth which is no safe harbor at all. We can't explain why human rights, democracy, civility, tolerance, the rule of law and all the good stuff is in fact good. All we can do is say what was being said during that debate over the European constitutional treaty in 2003. You give an essentially pragmatic or utilitarian answer.
