Ecologists will use reference landscapes to try and find the missing elements. Or if there's literally no pristine landscape left, they'll use historical ones. There's even a school of rewilding that says we should be looking at the end of the last ice age 12,000 years ago. And whatever was there, that's what we should be recreating - including woolly mammoths. I think here we're getting to a clone nation, big cloning, or bringing in like modern elephants,. translocating them into areas where you would have had a woolly mammoth because they sort of had similar behavior.
