The Rise and Fall of Leo III
Leo the third, so early 8th century, 717 to 741. Extremely competent person. His greatest accomplishment was in saving Constantinople during the Arab siege of 717-718. And yeah, he did something about icons. We don't know exactly what. Within East Roman society, there doesn't appear to have been any controversy at the time. Not much that we can detect. About iconoclasm in general, I have found no evidence of popular interest in it. This was an affair that was limited to very few people.
