There's a fascinating conflict between the two of them in the middle of this book that is kind of existential. He has been convinced by her brother said he should leave town because he doesn't have any prospects and is only there to take her land. So he's feeling bad about himself. And she disagrees like she does not, Alexander does not find this particularly persuasive. It's like it is New York I love you, but you're bringing me down is what that is.
