The Atrocities Committed by Franco's Forces
When the civil war starts, forces on both sides practise what I call the violence of anticipation. In Republican Spain, the state collapses and unions impart these great committees at the local level which are going to be in charge of committing that violence. Franco's active repression will become known as the White Terror. After the Civil War, these tactics will persist through at least the first nine years of Franco's dictatorship. This period will claim some 200,000 Spanish lives.
