The History of Judaism

A similar controversy raged among Jews in the 9th century, when Greek philosophy was being imported into Arabic-speaking culture. This too was a controversy about whether an original revelation should be understood in the light of later authoritative interpretation. The Mishnah and bodies of commentary that emerged in its wake, Talmud and Midrash were at the center of this debate.
