The History of Taiwan

Taiwan is a self-governed democracy of about 24 million people that's claimed by China. The island has long been a chess piece in East Asian geopolitics. In the 17th century, both the Dutch and the Spanish occupied parts of the island. For 50 years, Japan occupied Taiwan and also engaged in battles with the mainland.
