The Importance of Safety in Architecture
Jermaine Johnson grew up in a two-parent household, but his parents had thriving economic jobs. He says he didn't feel safe moving from Chicago to the suburbs because there were no other black people on the block. His parents sent him to Cape Town for an internship that was unpaid; it's one of the barriers for someone of color who can't afford this profession. "I'm fortunate enough to have parents again to have the money to pay their own things and still pay for my living expenses"
