The Mission of Captain Cook
Cook had three objectives. First he was to go to the recently discovered island of Tahiti for transit observations. After that, Cook was to head to New Zealand and explore those islands. The South Pacific region was really coming into the spotlight of several world powers. Any sort of expedition to this area would go a long way toward England staking a claim to any valuable lands it might discover.
