The Importance of Networks in Movement History

The American mythology of lifting oneself by the bootstraps is often used to highlight this American myth. But for black Americans, they were reliant on remaking kin and community because of the trauma of slavery that they come to think of themselves in different kinds of ways. And so it was really a powerful reminder of the things I did know from studying movement history that you could see those networks.
