Plastic also starts to be used for disposable products, like packaging and single use bags. It's something that's going to come back to be a major issue. Tupperware, Saran Wrap 1953, 1954 Styrofoam produced by Dow do relate to the food industry. The thing that's driving even your example with replacing paper with plastic is that it's very inexpensive to make. But then it doesn't take long for all this stuff to start causing some concerns.
