The Rise of German Nationalism in the Empire
Nationalism was particularly dangerous and problematic for the Habsburg Empire. Franz Josef naturally tried his best to contain the impact of rising national ideas. He appointed a conservative prime minister Edward Taffa who tried to keep some sort of internal harmony in the empire. In this time there was an early wave of liberal nationalism, which arose amidst groups with strong educated elites or middle classes.
