There were lots of different approaches, but mostly involved was trying to get to a high voltage. The one i liked the most is there were some german researchers who were trying to harness lightning. They did apparently actually manage to harness like, ten million volts,. An they were looking for 30 million. But the experiment ended when, unfortunately, sadly, one of the m fell down the ravine one day and died.
