The Importance of Vegetarianism

Porphyry argues that in the grand scheme of things it is a relatively newfangled religious practice. He draws on his plate-ness conception of the divine to argue that the highest gods would not want animal sacrifice anyway. Porphyry's vegetarianism may be motivated chiefly by his distaste for bodily things, but he should still get credit for exposing the weakness of ancient attempts to draw a clear line between humans who deserve justice and animals served for dinner.
