In an ironic twist of fate for this anti-imperialist queen, a spark ended up igniting an explosion during her funeral that killed thousands. Even after her death, she is still associated with the loss of life because during her funeral, there was a big boom and thousands of people died. So they mourn her because things were, I guess, better for the people who weren't being executed under her reign. Yeah. Again, complex history, kind of what ends up happening.
In 1828, after the death of her husband, Queen Ranavalona I. came into power by killing all other potential regents (wives, sons, mothers). At that time, she was between 30 and 40 years old. Ranavalona I. went down in history rather ingloriously and bears the surname “the cruel”. Many Malagasy call her regency tany maizina, in English “years of darkness”. But despite this she is still a rather complex character. One who did amazing and terrible things at the same time. Let us tell her story today
