Illinois jails and prisons were ravaged by covid 19 and 20 20. Prisoners in some facilities have organized and rebelled, but conditions remain intolerable. At the height of the pandemic, as many as 300 thousand incarcerated people were in solitary confinement. Bail funds and abolitionist groups like critical resistance and survived and punished have campaigned for the mass release of prisoners during the pandemic.
